Nokia N85 Mobile Phone Review – An Entertaining Package
By Carlson Osbourne
From the grand-master company of mobile phones comes the Nokia N85 (announced August 2008) – a member of the N series multimedia mini-computers specifically designed for “sharing, gaming and connecting” – created to set new standards for mobile entertainment.
Described by Juha-Pekka Sipponen, (Director, Nokia Series Finland) as “created to be more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete mobile entertainment package designed for connecting, sharing and discovering. The iconic Nokia N Series dual slider design has evolved to become smaller and sleeker while integrating the newest features and services to deliver the best mobile experience to date.”
And sleeker it is, weighing in at 128g, and measuring only 103mm x 50mm x 16mm – or if you prefer it in terms of volume – 76cc. It looks like a Nokia, with the smooth black case and basic, yet very functional screen and keyboard – almost mediocre in appearance, but despite it’s very ordinary looks – that is where mediocre ends. Since October 2008, this smart little phone has been packing a punch with what it offers.
On the 2G bands, it caters for 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900; on 3G it not only works on HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100, but it also communicates on the American bands of HSDPA 850 / 1900 and 2100.
Driven by the Symbian S60 OS, the phone sports a 2.6” AMOLED screen which supports 16M colours. At 240 x 320 pixels and with an accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and touch-sensitive navi wheel – this is a flexible display. Combined with the powerful 369 MHz ARM 11 processor and newest Ovi and third party services via 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Nokia N85 provides for seamless discovering and sharing.
The phone comes ready loaded with at least 10 made-for-mobile games and a voucher to receive one full game licence. When in landscape gaming mode, dedicated keyboard gaming keys light up, enhancing the gaming experience.
On 3G the standard battery will last up to 4h 30min, with up to 6h 50m talk time on 2G. The battery also allows for up to 363 hours of stand-by time on 2G and 360 hours when using 3G.
If gaming is not your ‘thing’ on the day – then the Nokia N85 offers a whole lot more in the line of entertainment.
The 5MP (2592 x 1944 px) camera sports Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and LED flash, is able to perform DVD quality VGA video recording at 30 frames per second and on the secondary level, CIF videocall camera. A-GPS capability makes it possible to geo-tag photos using Nokia Maps or other online sites such as Share on Flickr or Ovi.
Additional memory is available in the form of microSD – the phone comes with an 8GB microSD card, allowing up to 30 hours of music playback time with HiFi sound. Connectivity to places such as the Nokia Music Store or other music vendors makes building a personal music collection a pleasure, or alternatively USB can be used to align and synchronise PC and library collections.
RDS radio or internet stations provide an additional musical option, with play possible through either headphones (3.5mm jack) or wireless connection with a car or home stereo system.
When we looked back at the basics – the phone impressed further – the internal 85MB memory allows for almost unlimited entries and fields in the phonebook, 30 days of detailed call records and the 8GB max hotswap capability.

LG Viewty Ku990 – Fortus Mobile Phone Review
By Martin Fortus
Everything Mobile Users Need and More
A quality digital camera, a personal organizer, an mp3 player, and an internet browser, all in one small, mobile package only begins to describe the LG Viewty KU990. This stylish handset looks great and has all the latest mobile features, including a trendy touch screen and 3G technology, as well as a few surprises.
Touch screen phones have quickly become the most popular trend in mobile technology and LG perfected the feature with the superb Prada. The Viewty boasts this same amazing touch sensitive display screen with just three simple buttons along the bottom of the phone to send and receive calls. The large, vivid screen looks great but makes up most of the phone’s face so it is difficult to keep the display free of scratches, dust, and fingerprints.
While the touch screen of the LG Viewty KU990 may slow down those who have mastered texting with a traditional keypad, it opens a number of new options for sending texts. The included stylus can make operation of the touch screen more precise and can also be used with a handwriting recognition application for convenient messaging. The predictive text feature also makes it simple to send texts with the Viewty, even without a traditional keypad.
If you turn the LG Viewty over, it may be mistaken for a digital camera rather than a mobile phone. The top quality Schneider-Kreuznach lens is located on the backside of the handset, along with a Xenon flash for one of the best camera phone experiences available. Dedicated camera keys on the side of the Viewty make operation simple and QVGA quality video can be captured, viewed, and even uploaded to YouTube from the handset. The only downfall of the first class, 5 megapixel camera is the lack of a lens cover.
The trendy touch screen and high quality camera are not the only amazing features found on the LG Viewty KU990. The Viewty features both EDGE and 3G technology with HSDPA for internet surfing almost as efficient as a home internet connection. Support for all types of messaging and a convenient document viewer make it easy to stay productive on the go. Unfortunately, the Viewty does not offer wi-fi capabilities so a data plan is a must if you plan to take advantage of all the phone’s features.
The music player is just as pleasing, with integrated FM radio and support for all common media formats. Bluetooth technology allows you to enjoy the high quality audio features through an optional stereo headset or you can use the included stereo headphones for the same superb sound. The Viewty includes a number of multimedia entertainment features that rival those of a standalone mp3 player.
The LG Viewty KU990 is a truly amazing mobile phone and quite a work of technological art for LG. The touch screen is fun and functional, with excellent resolution, and the media features are unsurpassed. The 5 megapixel camera is one of the best available in the mobile market and the Smartlight feature makes the Xenon flash almost as admirable as a dedicated camera’s flash function. The LG Viewty is a great looking, stylish mobile phone with all the best features and then some. With minimal flaws, this touch screen mobile is destined to be a favourite.

Where To Find Low Cost Telecommunications / Mobile Phone Products
By Jonathan White
Technology is all around us. A lot of us depend on technology in our daily life’s day-to-day activities. One part of the technology industry that is getting better all the time is the telecommunications sector. Telecommunications is improving all the time. For example, broadband is becoming faster, mobile phones are becoming more advanced, etc. Due to this improving technology, many people who wish to keep up with it may now find it rather hard because of the fact that this technology is improving quicker and quicker all the time. In other words, once someone has brought a new mobile phone, they will then find that within a few months time a more advanced mobile phone will be on sale and their current mobile phone will become outdated.
As many of us want to keep up with the new and better telecommunication products including mobile phones, people are now finding it very difficult because of all the costs in purchasing all of the new products. In fact, some people spend hundreds of dollars on new mobile phones and other telecommunication products every year just so that they can have the most updated phones on the market. The only problem with this is that when you keep on buying new mobiles, new mobile phone products and other new telecommunication products every few months or even weeks, you will soon find out that the costs add up over the years and before you know it, you would have spent a good few hundreds of dollars on this technology every year.
A good option would be to buy your telecommunications including your mobile phone products of the Internet by using a telecommunications product price comparison guide before you make a purchase. This is a good idea as you can find the products that you need, you can then compare the prices from a large amount of different online merchants and you can then purchase your required products and save at the same time.
Where to find Telecommunication Products including Mobile Phones http://www.1phonesearch.com is a US product price comparison site that only lists products to do with telecommunications including mobile phones. In fact, it lists thousands of products from a large amount of different top quality online merchants.
If you are located in the UK then buying products from a US merchant is something that you may not want to do. So you could always use 1PhoneSearch’s UK product price comparison guide at: http://www.1phonesearch.co.uk . This guide also lists thousands of telecommunication products including mobile phones from top quality merchants in the UK.
Off course, some people are still weary about spending and using their credit cards online. There are more people spending on the Internet everyday, but there are still some people around the world that may not think that using an online site to purchase products is a good idea.
That’s one thing that is very good about an online price comparison site like the two mentioned above. If you are not happy about spending money online, then you could still use a product price comparison site as a lot of price comparison sites include merchants that you have most likely seen at your local supermarket.
So instead of spending hours a day looking through every shop just so that you can find the cheapest price for a product, you could always do your searching online through a product price comparison guide and then once you have done your searching and found the product/s that you are interested in, you can then go to your local supermarket and purchase the product directly from the merchant itself.
After using a product price comparison guide, no matter which one you use on the Internet, you are more likely to find the same products for a cheaper price and more quickly than what you would do if you did not use one. After time, you will notice your savings adding up over the years meaning that you will be able to afford even more mobile phones and other telecommunication products or you could even put the money into a savings account which you have saved up from using a product price comparison site.

Data Loss by T-Mobile, Microsoft and Danger
By Gregg Housh
You probably have already heard about the colossal failure of Microsoft and Danger’s cloud system, leading to the loss of roughly 800,000 T-Mobile users’ cell phone information. The unique methodology T-mobile employed to manage their customers information experienced a disastrous failure on October 5th and while questions still loom as to how this could have occurred the take home lesson for all PC users is plain as day : always backup your data properly. This can include a single local backup for standard data or a more complex plan involving local and online ( internet ) based backup for critical information.
Sidekick data was not stored long term on the cell phone itself, unlike the other cell phone models. Instead, data was uploaded to Microsoft / Danger’s cloud : a cluster of many PCs sharing the load of information storage and computing power. Systems like this aren’t all that strange, if you use gmail or flickr you have already got data stored in a cloud. When one PC in the cloud fails, typically there’s minimal to no information loss. If many computers fail, or if the software connecting the PCs has a difficulty, all the data may be lost forever.
Thankfully Microsoft had some backups of the Sidekick information and finally began restoring it to client cell phones on October 20th, 15 days after the 1st loss of data. In the meantime, thousands of blog content, news stories and RSS feeds flooded the Net with bad PR about T-Mobile and Microsoft. The feedback was totally justified as well, due to early concerns within Microsoft the backup information had somehow been damaged or lost in the same event that took down the cloud. The assumption a company with the kind of resources and expertise as Microsoft could have made such a rookie mistake of creating backups that were depending on the same resources or software as the cloud is inconceivable to tech pros.
The cost of this disaster is more than only data loss and bad press, the monetary toll is still growing. Between users terminating contracts early ( without the customary fee ), $100 T-Mobile gift cards being offered to users whose data was lost, and pulling Sidekicks from shelves and internet stores, the final cost could be somewhere in the millions. The cost to customers themselves is unknown, but expected to be just as large. Lost contacts, missed opportunities due to not having the correct phone numbers, and many other problems plagued sidekick users.
Data recovery is a difficult and expensive process, and it’s not always successful. To keep your information safe, whether it’s tax records or footage of your kids, you should always keep a secure backup. It’s a simple, cheap, and reliable step that will help stop multi-million dollar calamities and private heartbreaks, but it must be done correctly. Geek Choice techs are trained professionals who can help ensure that your backup solution is safe, even if your system fails. If you haven’t already, take the time to call us at 1-800-GEEK HELP (433-5435) about backing up your information today.

Nokia’s Rise In The Mobile Industry
By Oliver Jones
Nokia’s origins, astonishing as it may sound, lie in the paper, cable and rubber industries. A Finnish Engineer by the name of Fredrik Idestam started a paper mill near the river Nokianvirta, in southern Finland and soon discovered success with the rising requirement for paper all through the industrial revolution. Soon after, Finnish Rubber Works was set up in the same area, choosing Nokia as a brand name for many of its rubber products including footwear and tires. It invested sensibly and purchased majority shares in Finnish Cable Works, a firm set up in the early twentieth century, which discovered success in the post World War II period due to a rising requirement for telephone and electric cable.
The real start of Nokia’s mobile business can be traced to 1960 when Finnish Cable Works formed its first electronics branch, whose first goal was to promote and run computers. Soon after, Finnish Cable Works and Finnish Rubber Works joined to create the Nokia Group. At this time the electronics division contributed less than five percent of total revenues and it was not until the eighties that Nokia’s mobile venture really began to rise.
The era of mobile phones began in 1981 when the original international cellular network, Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), was created and Europe had by then deregulated its telecommunication industry. Morbia Oy, a joint venture between Nokia and a major Finnish television producer, launched its first portable phone, the Morbia Talkman, followed by the Morbia Cityman, the principal hand held phone that could be used on the Nordic network. By the end of the 1980s Nokia was well positioned to manage the world in mobile communication.
The initial part of the 1990s witnessed the birth of the Global System for Mobile Communication or GSM and Nokia was used to make the first GSM call yet. It was at this time that Nokia’s main leadership decided to intentionally concentrate mainly on telecommunication and disassemble its other extraneous divisions. The period was a significant one for Nokia with crucial occasions such as the debut of its first GSM phone, the debut of the famous Nokia Tune and Snake game and the debut of the world’s first Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) phone equipped to browse the internet. But most significantly, Nokia was now the comprehensive leader in the mobile phone business having effectively introduced several well renowned models.
Nokia sustained its lead in the twenty first century with the debut of its principal 3G phone in 2002. 3G services permitted mobile users to acquire more innovative services including wireless internet and video calls. Gaming and multimedia had also become a huge industry and Nokia included multiplayer gaming options in its more innovative phones like the N-Gage, while the well-liked N series serviced the wide range of video and audio requirements of its devoted consumers. By 2005 Nokia had sold above one billion phones almost half the number of global cellular subscriptions of two billion.
Now Nokia is well-known as the one of the most valued makes worldwide with thriving businesses in mobile phones, wireless data services, multimedia terminals and telecommunication networks. It has unceasingly brought in contemporary services like the Ovi, a website which lets users to download helpful Nokia applications and save and move digital data, through the years to improve the consumer experience. No wonder thousands of Nokia consumers across the planet look at it not just as a mobile phone, but a way of life.

Fast Food Restaurants Are Going Mobile
By Oliver Lewis
What if you could order a meal from your favorite fast food joint with your cell phone? Then all you would have to do is go pick it up and enjoy it. Well, that is exactly what is on the horizon for cell phone users as fast food restaurants are going mobile with SMS technology.
A company in the UK has come up with a way to utilize the global texting network. Businesses, like fast food restaurants, place the small device, called an SMS printer, in the kitchen. The unit receives messages as a text message and prints it out. The kitchen staff treats it as an order and fills it as they would any order. All the customer has to do is pick it up.
The SMS printer is a standalone device that is not dependent on the Internet and does not require a hard phone line in order to operate. Therefore it is completely and totally portable. It is also small enough to be placed anywhere that is out of the way, yet accessible to the staff. Kitchens in fast food settings can use these types of printers to convey messages to kitchen staff correctly.
The printers use a thermal standard receipt paper sort of like that used by some fax machines. They also use a standard SIM card like all cell phones. This is how the printer picks up the SMS text message and prints it for viewing. The SIM cards can be bought almost anywhere and will can be either a contract or PAYG (pay as you go) type card. This choice is totally yours, in either case.
Here is how this idea works. A customer goes online and places an order. Before the order is completed, it can be edited or changed in any way. Payment is also done online and the order is placed. Your order is now sent through the SMS network to the kitchen. The kitchen sees your order exactly as you entered it, so mistakes with the orders are not a problem.
Since the whole process is done electronically, there are no interactions to worry about, misunderstandings or forgotten details. It all comes through in hard copy print to the kitchen personnel. Customers no longer have to pick up a phone or wait in a line at their favorite fast food or takeaway restaurant.
Customers can even control when the order is placed with the push of a button and with the exception of the order that prints in the kitchen, is entirely paperless. There is no call to make, handwriting to decipher or line to wait in.
Because the orders are placed on the Internet, they may be placed from any computer whether that is a desktop PC, a laptop or a cell phone with Internet capabilities and access. Not only is this a quicker, more precise order process, but adds a new dimension to fast food as we know it now.
So now the Internet has a new use for everyday life. Fast food has gone mobile in one maneuver.
